Getting Comfortable with Threads: A small business guide to the new social media platform from Meta.

Updated: Sep 2, 2023

Threads, Meta's new Twitter-competitor social media platform, made a huge splash when it launched in early July 2023.

As the first major social media platform to arrive in North America since the introduction of TikTok, Threads took the social media space by storm and was downloaded by more than 70 million users in its first few days.

Since launch the social platform has seen a drop in daily users. A drop that the Threads team says they expected, considering how new the platform is.

To join or not to join?

So what’s the buzz and is it a tool you should spend your time with as you work to grow your business?

The makers of Threads describe it as an app for sharing text updates and joining public conversations. If you’re already familiar with Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, getting started on Threads should be easy for you.

The platform feels new, it’s still a baby social network. The use stats for Threads are still all over the place since it hasn’t yet become a part of daily social media routines. The app is also missing some features. Threads is still missing a web version, search is not great in the app, and you won’t find groups, or live video channels here yet.

On the flip side, Threads is still free from the noise and content overload of the more established social media spaces, giving you an opportunity to find new fans without having to pay for reach.

Interestingly, Threads gives new users the option to automatically follow everyone they follow on Instagram. If your business has an Instagram account, it’s likely that a portion of your Instagram audience will do this “giving you an opportunity” to enter a new social media space with a pre-built audience.

So what should you post on Threads?

Don’t invest in a big, platform-specific content strategy, and don’t spend time or funds on making creative only for Threads. Instead, head in there and start talking to your new neighbours.

Here are some conversation starter prompts you can use:

  • Introduce your brand and your products.

  • Show off your products - Threads supports the use of images and videos in posts.

  • Promote events you’re participating in, always remembering to share the number and directions to your booth, table and location.

  • Be available to your customers and fans who may have questions or might have an issue with a product or service. Answer them promptly and guide them to your customer service channels.

  • Share company news.

  • Get your brand name out there by making connections. Comment on posts from communities, retailers, other brands, and content creators you love and share them to amplify their message.

  • Network! Find potential partners, industry influencers, and others you’d like to connect with and engage with them in post comments. (Threads doesn’t yet have a direct or private messaging function.)

  • Promote your newsletter and share links to email sign-up pages.

Most importantly, have fun!

This social media platform has the goal of being a positive and welcoming space. What a great opportunity to share fun, funny and valuable content to a happy audience.
